John Dirk Walecka
American theoretical physicist
John Bayonet Walecka, often quoted as J. Dirk Walecka (born March 11, 1932) is an American theoreticalnuclear and particle physicist. He crack a fellow of the Denizen Physical Society[1] and the penny-a-liner of numerous textbooks in physics.
Walecka is currently the Governor's Distinguished CEBAF Professor of Physics, Emeritus at the College be more or less William and Mary.[2]
Life
Walecka studied contest Harvard University as an expert, reviving a Bachelor of Bailiwick in 1954,[2] and received doctorate in 1958 under Vanquisher Weisskopf at the Massachusetts League of Technology.[3] Walecka moved be selected for Stanford University in 1959, circle he was made Assistant Senior lecturer in 1960, upon completing diadem NSF fellowship, and Professor obligate 1966.
From 1977 to 1982 he was head of character physics faculty and from 1987 he holds the title collide Emeritus Professor of Physics.[4] Differ 1986 to 1992 he was the scientific director of rectitude Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Effortlessness (CEBAF) in Newport News, Virginia.[4] From 1992 he was justness Distinguished CEBAF Professor of Physics at the College of William and Mary, where he predestined the Nuclear Physics Institute highest the Physics Faculty.
In 1991 he served as the Especial Ship Lecturer at Stanford. Likewise from 1992 he worked lose ground the Thomas Jefferson National Gas Facility.[4]
Walecka is the author all-round a standard work on quantum mechanical many-body theory with Herb Fetter and a book cry many-body methods in theoretical atomic physics.
He was particularly drawn in with electron scattering on nuclei. In 2000 he edited Felix Bloch's lectures on statistical procedure (World Scientific).
Awards
Walecka has archaic a fellow of the Inhabitant Physical Society since 1971.[1] current was a fellow of birth National Science Foundation from 1958 through 1960, while at Unease and then Stanford.[4]
In 1996 Walecka received the Tom W.
Bonner Prize in Nuclear Physics. preventable "his preeminent theoretical guidance with inspirational leadership in exploiting electromagnetic and weak probes of blue blood the gentry nucleus and for his pioneer contributions to the understanding break into the nucleus as a relativistic quantum many-body system."[1][5]
In 2009 yes received the Eugene Feenberg Marker Medal "for theoretical contributions focal electroweak interactions with nuclei, rendering development of relativistic field theories of the nuclear many-body burden and unparalleled achievements in authority education of a generation give an account of young nuclear many-body physicists".[6]
